OK, more by luck than judgement, but I have re-paired the devices and it
all seems to be working now.  Also, the problem I reported with received
messages seems to have been fixed by downgrading to the most recent
stable (x86) glibc/gcc etc, although the downgrade isn't something to be
taken lightly (actually it's more of a reinstall ;)

All working now though, just waiting for the Evolution integration :)
