This isn't strictly XML, but it's thoughts on earlier hypertext forms by
someone who does a lot of XML (and is on this list as well):

I think we're reinventing Mr.Shepard's work on a regular basis, and I
suspect those little stickers may even have some advantages over our
current approaches.
