I tested this quickly with a friend of mine's Treo:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=356755

You need to enable "Dial-up networking" in the Bluetooth preferences.
If you get an output to:
sdptool search --bdaddr 00:07:E0:20:E1:E8 DUN
then you're in.
