My case appears to be different:

chrisp at bandersnatch ~ $ gnome-obex-send --dest=00:12:47:10:CF:D5
BLAGGER.COM
Browsing 00:12:47:10:CF:D5 ...
Service Name: OPP
Service RecHandle: 0x10004
Protocol Descriptor List:
  "L2CAP" (0x0100)
  "RFCOMM" (0x0003)
    Channel: 6
  "OBEX" (0x0008)
Service Class ID List:
  "OBEX Object Push" (0x1105)
** Message: device 00:12:47:10:CF:D5 (OBEX Object Push) port 6

** (gnome-obex-send:17927): CRITICAL **: btctl_obexclient_source_new:
assertion `channel <= 0' failed

** (gnome-obex-send:17927): WARNING **: Unable to initialize OBEX client
source

Which then gives me an error 'Unable to connect to remote device'

In addition, I have followed the instructions at
http://klamstwo.org/evad/archives/18, and my phone show up in the
context menus, but I still get the same error in sending

You could use the trick documented at
