It's defined in RFC2731. http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2731.txt

As I make such a fuss about standards normally, it seems probably
sensible that we should support this one.

However, if we didn't, and omitted the schema.foaf definition
altogether, I very much doubt the universe would care.
